MUVE Location: Jabberwock (Part 2)

Standard

The functionality and interactivity can be seen in many areas of the island.

There are hammocks and chairs seated around wine barrels, so small groups may sit and enjoy a drink. The chairs provide different poses, and some chairs and hammocks have multiple poses. The bottles of drink you can click on give a wide variety of drink choices, from rum and brandy to martinis and a coconut tropical which comes with a small umbrella!

  • The gravestone can be clicked on to reveal the skeleton beneath.
  • Avatars can purchase authentic looking guns that can be used to shoot pumpkins and bottles lined atop a concrete fence.
  • There is a peacock that spreads it wings every 20 seconds or so. The textures used to create the bird help make the peacock look very realistic in its bright greens and blues.

There is also a well to be climbed down.  At the bottom is a small cavern, click to light the fire torches on the wall. Walk through the waterfall and the cavern opens up to a large underground room with a staircase heading down further. There are candles atop the wooden staircase and water dripping through in a few places. At the bottom of the steps is the largest part of the cavern and here there is a large purple crystal nestled in the rocks plus a crate filled with treasure to take (coins, gold, granite and meat). There is also hammocks for resting, as well as chairs and crates (with multiple pose positions). It appears to be a large gathering place.

Prims and scripts

Cannon - wireframe mode

Cannon - wireframe mode

There appears to be many items that are scripted. For example:

Drinks:

  • Each drink has its own movement/pose script that makes the avatar appear to be consuming the drink or say, lazily rolling the wine around the glass. I believe that pose scripts would need to know and change the angle and rotation of the arms head and drink.
  • Each drink type (i.e. the glass or bottle it’s resides in) would not be complex and would only be made of a few prims each. Bottles are likely be made of spheres and cylinders.

Chairs:

  • Would again use a pose script to allow the avatar to sit in different poses for whether it is laying back, sitting up straight rigidly or sitting cross-legged.

Cannons:

  • Click on the cannon and it lets off a cannon shot, large boom, smoke and all. The object says it is made of only 4 prims. Yet to my eye it appears to be made of more. It could be that the appearance of the textures is deceiving me into believing there are more than 4 prims.
  • The script is called SSS.Cannon.Script. It is touch activated and (I believe) it contains set timer event to reset itself.

Sharky the friendly shark (but not too friendly):

  • When walking under the water, Sharky will come in for a bite! Sharky is made of 8 prims and uses light grey textures. Sharky also contains a detection script. I think the script must sends out a detection once every few minutes or so.
  • Sharky also has a sound script (the Jaws theme song, plus it calls out its own name) and also a motion script (swimming towards you plus it tail swooshing).

Peacock:

  • The peacock contains 17 prims and many textures. When the peacock spreads it wings, the visibility state is on, when it closes it wings the tails visibility state is off.
  • I believe the visibility state switches between on and off approximately every 15-20 seconds. The peacock also contains a movement script so that it can slowly turn around and move a few steps.

The overall experience and Jabberwocks comparison to ‘locations’

I have thoroughly enjoyed my exploration of the island and even more, the people I have met.

I believe it is a well looked after area in respect to the builds and also the type of people involved. This has made it a pleasurable experience to partake in as I have found other locations to be large, stark and without much to do. I believe its size (which is small in comparison to other areas) helps its community feel and allows the place to feel more immersive and interactive.

    • Hello, I am unsure of the movie you are referring too.

This blog is referring to a location in Second Life. It was written for a class I was taking on virtual environments.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog! 😉
